Ermonela Jaho and Carlo Rizzi perform Donizetti’s “Venne sull’ali ai zefferi” live in studio. Dedicated to Vincenzo Bellini upon his death, this lament was first published in the Milanese journal Glissons, n’appuyons pas on 2 January 1836.

Venne sull’ali ai zeffiri

Agl’Itali un sospiro:

Era dell’Orfeo Siculo

Ultimo e triste spiro;

Era l’addio del figlio

Che muore in stranio suol.

Commossa, Italia, al nunzio

Di così ria sventura,

Piange sul fato barbaro,

Che i suoi miglior le fura,

E il pianto dell’Italia

Ha l’eco in stranio suol.

Ora che al coro angelico

Ti unisti, o spirto eletto,

Spiega i concenti flebili,

Il canto dell’affetto,

E per udirti gl’angeli

Terran sospeso il vol.

Forse i concenti armonici

Che accordi in Paradiso

Verran sull’ale ai zeffiri

A confortarci al riso,

E fien l’addio del figlio

Che al ciel si mosse a vol.

It came on the wings of zephyrs,

A sigh to the Italians:

It was the last sad breath

Of the Sicilian Orpheus;

It was the farewell of the son

Who died on foreign soil.

Italy, moved at the news

Of such harsh misfortune,

Weeps at cruel fate,

Which had stolen one of its best,

And the tears of Italy

Find an echo in foreign lands.

Now that you, O blest spirit,

Have joined the angelic choir,

Raise these mournful sounds,

This song of feeling,

And to hear you the angels

Will suspend their flight.

Perhaps the harmonious music

That you invent in Paradise

Will be borne on the wings of zephyrs

To comfort us with a smile,

And become the son’s farewell

As he flew towards heaven.
