Mark Zuckerberg: I’m looking forward to sharing an update on all this work on September 16th at our Facebook Connect event!

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I believe that augmented and virtual reality will be the next major computing platforms and that they’ll allow us all to feel closer and more present with each other, even when we can’t physically be together. These technologies deliver the feeling of presence — as if we’re right there next to each other — which no other screen or computing platform can deliver.

Today we’re unifying all our teams working on these areas — our Oculus products, augmented reality efforts, home devices, and long term research initiatives, including areas like neural interfaces — into a group called Facebook Reality Labs. This better reflects the full scope of what we’re hoping to build: giving people the power to feel connected anytime, anywhere.
