Traditonal music lovers, contemporary artists and heritage enthusiasts are in for a treat at the Fan Noli Cultural Center with a timely online conversation on the legendary clarinetist, Usta Laver Bariu (1929-2014) His clarinet captured the soul, sorrow, and joy of the south as it channeled the spirit of our traditional music.
To guide us through the musical roots and traditional ancestry, we are deeply honored and fortunate to be joined by Vasil Sofokli Tole, who has dedicated his life to preserving, analyzing, and elevating Albanian music on the global stage. He is a leading figure in the music scene, a celebrated composer, and a distinguished member and Vice President of the Academy of Sciences. Tole is a visionary ethnomusicologist who helped bring Albanian iso-polyphony to UNESCO recognition and author of the definitive work on the subject of our talk: ‘Laver Bariu, Ustai i Fundit’.
Folk music in Albania acts as an oral archive of the country’s history, migration, and survival.
And for today’s musicians tracing their lineage, Laver Bariu’s work provides an enduring framework.
