Committee to Protect Journalists: Remembering Anna Politkovskaya
Today marks 20 years since the murder of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya in Moscow on October 7, 2006.
The 48-year-old, who was renowned for her investigative reports on human rights abuses by the Russian military in Chechnya, was gunned down in her apartment building.
Russian authorities must bring all those responsible for her killing to justice, including those who ordered it. Impunity cannot prevail.
Today, independent journalism has been stifled in the Russian Federation, with at least 30 journalists currently in jail. We call on authorities to allow journalists to work freely and safely and release all those unjustly detained.
