Swedish Ambassador Says Qualitative and Strong Media Is Needed
TIRANA – “We need a qualitative and strong media in all times but perhaps even more in difficult times,” has said the Swedish Ambassador to Albania, Elsa Hastad.
Ambassador Hastad made that comment in a letter of reply to members of the Albanian section of Association of European Journalism, who have recently sent an open letter to Albanian authorities and some representatives of the diplomatic corps in Tirana, including Swedish Embassy, in which they express their concerns over the situation created in the media at the time of coronavirus pandemic. Among others their worries are the dismissal of staff and halving of the salaries of journalists under the pretension of financial problems. “All this happens in a period when most of journalists are engaged more than before in reporting on the situation,” said Association’s members who call for support for the creation of a facilitating and support package for all Albanian media.
In her letter of reply dated April 14, 2020, the Swedish Ambassador, Hastad said thanked the journalists for asking for the attention regarding one of the most part of society in a well-functioning democracy, namely the media.
“We need a qualitative and strong media in all times but perhaps even more in difficult times. We need you to provide us with accurate information, we need you to hold civil servants, like myself, institutions and politicians accountable,” said the Ambassador in her reply.
In addition she said: “Sweden has an increased concern about the threats and challenges of upholding democratic values around the world. We see a shrinking space for democracy in many countries. Democracy needs to be protected every day and therefore Sweden has initiated Drive of Democracy as on e of the key focus areas for the Swedish government.”
In conclusion Swedish Ambassador Elsa Hastad said: “I am proud that Sweden is a strong supporter of media globally and in the Western Balkans. However, I think that more can be done. Media is a corner stone for democracy. I look forward to continuing this dialogue with you and other journalists in Albania”.
